If your baby’s skin gets irritated or she develops a rash, if she coughs or sneezes or gets cranky during the massage, it’s probably not the massage itself. More likely, it’s what you’re using on her body. Even a so-called natural oil can be problematic, so base your choice on your baby, not on you. You might love the scent of a particular product, but you don’t know how your baby’s skin will react until you actually try it. At one month, it’s too early to know whether your baby has any allergies—say, to nuts. But if nut allergies run in the family, be extra careful. Read the label, and look at the ingredients. If an oil, for example, is nut-free, try it for a few days on a part of her body that’s not near her face, such as her lower leg. If she has any kind of bad reaction, try a different product instead.
